What is a Stem Cell Injection?
Bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) is an autologous (own) stem cell therapy used to accelerate the healing process of a variety of chronic and acute orthopedic injuries. A large portion of the human body’s stem cells are found in bone marrow, and have a natural ability to repair damaged tissue.
BMAC is classified as an autologous stem cell therapy since it uses a patient’s own “pluripotent” adult stem cells or placental tissues and not embryonic or fetal stem cells. Using an autologous stem cell orthopedic injection, OPTIMAL Pain & Regenerative Medicine® can produce similar results without the ethical concerns of using embryonic stem cells. Using a patient’s own stem cells reduces the risk of infection and the possibility of immune rejection.
How are Adult Stem Cells Harvested?
Adult stem cells can be extracted from a patient’s own body in several areas, including bone marrow. For an autologous stem cell orthopedic injection, a patient will first undergo a procedure to collect the stem cells. During this portion of the procedure, bone marrow is drawn, typically from the hip region, and circulated through a machine where the blood is separated into various parts, including a combination of pluripotent stem cells, white blood cells and platelets. The stem cell combination is then injected into the patient’s injured tissues to promote regeneration.
What are Stem Cell Orthopedic Injections used for?
