What You Need to Know About Hip Joint Pain

Hip joint pain is the general term used for pain felt in or around the hip joint including the groin and thigh.

Hip joint pain is most often caused by inflamed tendons due to over activity or overuse. The tendons can cause extreme pain, but usually heals within a few days. The most common long-term cause of hip joint pain is arthritis. Approximately 20% of individuals will experience the symptoms of hip arthritis including pain, stiffness and difficulty walking. Other causes of pain include hip fractures, bursitis, snapping hip syndrome and osteonecrosis.

Hip joint pain treatments depend on the cause of pain. Rest and ice/heat may be utilized for short-term causes. Long-term causes may need medications, injections, physical therapy or possible surgery to alleviate the pain.

What You Need to Know About Knee Joint Pain

The knee is the largest joint in the body and is a common cause of pain in many individuals. This joint allows movement for sitting, squatting, jumping and walking.

Knee joint pain is often caused by an injury when an individual twists or moves the joint beyond its intended range of motion. Common knee injuries include ACL, MCL and PCL (ligament) injuries, tendon injuries, bursitis, dislocated kneecap, iliotibial band syndrome and Osgood-Schlatter disease. Virtually any type of arthritis can lead to knee joint pain. Osteoarthritis of the knee is the most common form of knee arthritis. It is estimated to affect approximately 50% of individuals.

Knee joint pain can be treated in numerous ways ranging from rest to PRP injections to surgery. Many cases of knee pain will start with conservative treatments including rest, strength exercises and weight loss. Injections and medications may be used if the conservative treatments do not reduce the pain level. If the pain still persists, surgery may be an option.
