What is a Trigger Point Injection?
Many people suffer from sore, sensitive spots in their muscles, or trigger points. When other treatment options such as physical therapy do not help alleviate muscle pain, a trigger point injection is a viable option.
Trigger point injections can be used for patients who have consistent, active muscle pain in a trigger point. The injections are commonly used in the neck, back, arm, and leg areas. The injections can also be used to help treat chronic tension headaches, myofascial pain syndrome, and fibromyalgia.
What Happens During a Trigger Point Injection?
A trigger point injection is an outpatient procedure designed to help patients reduce muscle pain caused by trigger points. During the injection process, one of our certified physicians will insert a small needle containing local anesthetic or saline, possibly a corticosteroid, into the patient’s trigger point. With the injection, the trigger point is made inactive and the muscle pain is alleviated. The trigger point injection may cause a twitch or mild pain that lasts only a few moments.
Are there Complications with a Trigger Point Injection?
Complications are rare, and include infection, bleeding, failure to alleviate the muscle pain, or an increase in pain. If you are interested in learning more about these injections and the injection process, please contact one of the physicians at OPTIMAL Pain & Regenerative Medicine®.
